Treatment of Acidosis

The treatment of metabolic acidosis is determined primarily on the cause. For example, treatment may be required to manage diabetes with the help of insulin or to get rid of toxic matter from the blood in case of poisoning.

The respiratory acidosis requires a treatment by improving the function of the lungs. Drugs are used to open the airways (bronchodilators, such as albuterol). This will help people who are suffering from lung diseases such as asthma and emphysema. Some people would need mechanical ventilation to aid breathing if they have impaired breathing or lung function.

Acidosis can be treated directly as well. In case of mild acidosis, the administration of intravenous fluids may be advised. In a very severe, however rare, bicarbonate may be given intravenously. Nevertheless bicarbonate provides only temporary relief and may cause harm by overloading the body with sodium and water.
